Emergency Services

In a medical emergency, every second counts.  The hospitals of Saint Thomas Health are staffed by remarkable and dedicated teams of emergency room physicians and nurses who have both the training and the experience to care for virtually every urgent medical need.

Our emergency services include accredited Chest Pain Centers (link to Chest Pain Network) at each hospital location, and specialized treatment for stroke, as well as a vast array of illness and injury.  Whether you or a loved one has an emergency, accident or suffers a traumatic injury, we will provide holistic care for your body, mind and spirit.

When you enter the Emergency Department, you should check in at the triage desk.  A nurse will see you as soon as possible to determine the severity of your problem.  Should you have to wait a few moments, we ask that you prepare for the following questions:

  • What is your problem today?  While the illness that brought you to the emergency department might be related to an ongoing condition, it is important for the doctor to know why you need help right now.
  • Are you in pain?  If so, where?
  • Are you taking any medications?  This includes over the counter or herbal medications.
  • Are there any allergies that the doctor should know about?
  • Is there a private physician that we may contact?
  • Is there someone to contact on your behalf?

Should you require assistance to facilitate communication of your illness or injury to our staff, we have interpreters available by phone.  Additionally, we have resources available to communicate with those who are hearing impaired.

As you might expect, the sickest patients in the emergency room are treated first.  Those with less serious problems are treated according to need.  This process is known as triage.  After the triage interview is completed, the nurse will send you to the appropriate treatment area.

If your illness or injury is of a less severe nature, you will be released from the Emergency Department with a set of discharge instructions that may include prescriptions for medications.  The physician and nurse will review these instructions with you.  Be sure to ask if you have any questions about your discharge instructions.

The final process in your visit will be a stop at the cashier’s office to arrange for payment for services rendered during your stay.  We accept all forms of payment.  The registrar is available to assist you with this process.
